in the forest cathedral
a dense congregation of pines
conspires

to drown out the Sun
in a unified gesture of defiance
while hidden roots

stretch and tangle
beneath pews of stumps
and shadowed ground

strangling the vulnerable saplings
to stake a greater claim.
